No plans for Chemehuevi casino with land buy

The Chemehuevi Tribe of Arizona probably won't be able to open a casino on land it purchased in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Today's News-Herald reports.

The tribe would have to submit a land-into-trust application for the two parcels in the city. Since the land is not part of the reservation, it would be considered an off-reservation acquisition.

In January, the tribe was among those whose off-reservation acquisitions were rejected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs under a new policy that makes it harder for tribes to acquire land away from existing reservations. That application was for a casino in Barstow, California -- much further away than Lake Havasu City.
