Editorial: Oklahoma tribes keep growing in gaming

"As head of the Chickasaw Nation’s business arm, Brian Campbell has seen huge growth in gaming and doesn’t expect it to abate any time soon. Apparently, gaming is one sure bet in these shaky economic times.

"Casino business is historically a good bet in a recession,” Campbell said last week while showing off expansion of the tribe’s WinStar casino near Thackerville. He points out that after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, business improved.

We’re not sure what that says about the betting public. But what’s certain is that many casinos across Oklahoma are thriving and tribes are banking on that continuing — there are now 101 casinos in the state. Only California and Connecticut generated more than the $2.5 billion in revenue that Oklahoma tribal gaming centers produced in 2007."
