The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut will negotiate with the United Auto Workers under tribal law.
The tribe and the union issued a joint statement on Friday to see if they can reach an agreement. “The UAW and the Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprise agreed to enter into discussions for 30 days to determine if an agreement can be reached to bargain under tribal law,” they said, The Norwich Bulletin reported.
The tribe objects to the imposition of federal labor law on the reservation. The tribe says the employees at Foxwoods Resort Casino should organize under tribal law.
Card dealers at the casino voted to organize with the UAW nearly a year ago.
