Kansas appeals decision on Wyandotte casino

The state of Kansas is asking the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to stop the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma from operating a casino in downtown Kansas City. The state filed the lawsuit in 1996 but lost a slew of rulings in court. An appeal would be the last chance to block the 7th Street Casino, a modest Class II facility on 0.5 acres of trust land. At issue is whether the tribe's property can be used for a casino under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The land was taken into trust after 1988 but the courts ruled that its purchase satisfied the land claim exception of IGRA. Get the Story:
