The mayor of La Center, Washington, is proposing a new casino agreement with the Cowlitz Tribe but other city officials say they don't want to negotiate.
The tribe has offered $3 million annually for 10 years to make up for the loss of revenues at non-Indian card clubs. Mayor Jim Irish wants $3.5 million a year in perpetuity.
At the same time, Irish said the city remains opposed to the Cowlitz Casino Resort. At least three members of the five-member city council say they don't want to deal with the tribe.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs published a final environmental impact statement that recommends acquisition of 152 acres in trust for the project.
