City seeks more information on Ponca Tribe's casino

The city in Iowa where the Ponca Tribe wants to build a casino is urging others to wait before taking a stance on the controversial project.

The tribe has 5 acres in trust in Carter Lake. In a December 31, 2007, decision, the National Indian Gaming Commission said the land can be used for a casino.

The state of Nebraska is suing the NIGC to overturn the decision and Iowa is considering its own lawsuit. The board in Pottawattamie County is meeting next week to vote on possibly joining the litigation.

But the city council in Carter Lake says the state and the county should hear more from the tribe before taking action. The tribe has yet to unveil full plans for the casino and has promised to offset impacts of the development.
