"We at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe understand that not everyone can be in favor of casinos, but to call the proposed Monticello casino a "major disaster averted" could not be more off the mark.
The tribe, along with Governor Spitzer, congressional representatives, local leaders and officials, and many Sullivan County residents, remains convinced that a Catskills casino is just the economic catalyst needed to help turn the area around. No misinformed decision from the Interior Department has changed that.
Keeping the Indians down and restricted to the reservation is part of a paternalistic attitude some find hard to shake. The Mohawks will continue to fight off that disaster."
