Editorial: Choctaw opportunity in Jackson County

"Now that the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs has placed a seemingly insurmountable obstacle in the path of a Choctaw casino in Jackson County, we hope that the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will not abandon South Mississippi as a place to do business.

As we have made clear from the beginning, the Choctaws would be a welcome addition to the casino market in either Hancock or Harrison counties, where their enterprise could compete slot-to-slot with other gaming companies.

The Choctaws are a notable part of the Jackson County business community and we hope that relationship will not only stay in place, but prosper.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there are numerous opportunities for investment across South Mississippi, and the Choctaws should be encouraged to take advantage of them."
