Eastern Cherokees weigh liquor sales at casino

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is considering a request to sell liquor at the tribe's North Carolina casino.

The Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise Board says liquor at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino could boost revenues. The casino is undergoing a $650 million expansion amid a national economic downturn.

"Right now, revenues are very flat," board chair Norma Moss told The Smoky Mountain News.

Chief Michell Hicks said he opposes the sale of liquor on the reservation. But he told WLOS-TV that a decision should be made by Cherokee voters.
