Massachusetts Gov Deval Patrick (D) downplayed news reports that he will negotiate a Class III gaming compact with the Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe.
Patrick told WBZ-TV on Monday that he was ready to sit down with the tribe. WBZ said talks could begin later this month.
But Patrick and the tribe said negotiations aren't beginning any time soon. The tribe will probably wait until its land-into-trust application is further along in the process, a spokesperson said.
The tribe wants land placed in trust in two towns. The site in one of the towns will be used for gaming.
