The city council in San Jacinto, California, is opposing plans by the Soboba Band of Luiseno
Indians to acquire 535 acres for a gaming project.
The city cited a rash of violence on the reservation in opposing the tribe's land-into-trust application. Three tribal members were killed by Riverside County Sheriff's deputies over the course of a week earlier this month.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is preparing an environmental impact statement for the project.
