A candidate for New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District is accusing a rival of being a "blackjack dealer in Las Vegas" even though the rival actually worked at a tribal casino.
Ben Ray Lujan used to be a card dealer at the casino owned by Pojoaque Pueblo. Now he sits on the state Public Regulation Commission and is considered the leading Democratic candidate for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rep. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico).
Don Wiviott, another candidate, is running a television ad that refers to Lujan's gaming career. The spot implies that Lujan owes his state job to his father -- New Mexico House Speaker Ben Lujan.
Six candidates are seeking the nomination. Benny Shendo, from Jemez Pueblo, is the only Native American in the race.
