Connecticut Senate passes tribal smoking ban

The Connecticut Senate passed a bill on Friday that bans smoking at tribal casinos.

Debate lasted nearly five hours, The New London Day reported. Republicans tried to block the bill and limit its impact but were rebuffed by Democrats.

The Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation oppose the bill. They say the issue needs to be negotiated on a government-to-government basis with the state.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell (R) wants to negotiate with the tribes. House Speaker James Amann, a Democrat, said he won't bring up the bill in the House.
