The National Labor Relations
Board on Thursday scheduled a union election at the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.
The International Union of Operating
Engineers wants to organize about 310 engineering department workers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. The vote takes place May 1.
The election is the second at the casino. Last fall, the United Auto Workers organized among 3,000 card dealers.
The NLRB has rejected the tribe's assertions that federal labor law
does not apply at the casino. In 2004, the board overturned 30 years of precedent and said it
would assert jurisdiction at tribal enterprises on a case-by-case basis.
