The National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday authorized the International Union of Operating Engineers to hold a union election at the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.
NLRB Regional Director Peter Hoffman rejected the tribe's claim that its sovereignty barred the application of federal labor laws at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. He cited precedent set by another tribal casino case that is in the federal courts.
The union wants to organize among 310 physical plant workers at Foxwoods. The United Auto Workers has already organized 3,000 card dealers.
