Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell (R) is being urged to start negotiations with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe over smoking at their casinos.
Rell so far has stayed out of a controversial debate over smoking at the Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Mohegan Sun Casino. She appears to be waiting until the Legislature acts on the issue.
Some lawmakers, however, want her to start talking with tribes now. They are worried legislation could lead to costly and drawn-out litigation.
Tribal leaders say the state can't impose its laws at their gaming facilities. But they have indicated a willingness to discuss the issue and come to a government-to-government agreement.
