Chumash neighbors voted against gaming deals

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians of California didn't have a gaming compact on the ballot last month but nearby voters expressed their displeasure with the tribe anyway.

According to The Lompoc Record, 62 percent of voters in Santa Ynez Valley opposed the four gaming compacts that were on the ballot. In comparison, 59 percent of voters elsewhere in Santa Barbara County supported the compacts.

The tribe has had a rocky relationship with its neighbors. At one point, musician David Crosby went to Congress to complain about the tribe's land-into-trust applications and casino plans.
