Study looks at impact of casinos in Connecticut

The negative effects sometimes associated with gaming -- such as crime and declining property values -- have not been seen in Connecticut, according to a new study.

Steven Lanza, the executive editor of the Connecticut Economy, an academic journal, said the casinos owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe have not had a negative impact on their surrounding communities. Crime is lower than expected and property values have rise, according to the article “Spill-Free Gaming."

"Connecticut appears to have largely escaped some of the most feared adverse consequences of hosting two of the world’s largest gaming resorts," Lanza wrote [PDF].

The tribes each contribute 25 percent of slot machines revenues to the state.
