A labor union says it will move forward with efforts to organize security guards at the casino owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan.
The International Union Security Police
& Fire Professionals of America filed for an election but withdrew the request two days before the vote was to take place. Organizer Steve Maritas now says the election will take place in about six months.
Last fall, the Teamsters tried to organize housekeeping staff at the Soaring Eagle Casino
& Resort. The National Labor Relations Board oversaw the election, in which employees rejected the union by a 2-1 vote.
The tribe says the NLRB doesn't have jurisdiction on the reservation but has been complying with federal labor law to prevent legal challenges from union organizers.
