About 200 people attended a public hearing about the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's proposed casino in DeKalb County, Illinois.
The Kansas-based tribe wants to build a Class II facility on 128 acres in the county. The land is part of a 1,280-acre reservation that was granted to a former Potawatomi chief.
The Indian lands status of the parcel is being examined by the National Indian Gaming Commission. County Board Chair Ruth Anne Tobias said a decision isn't expected until 2009.
Meanwhile, the tribe has reached an agreement with the county to share a portion of gaming revenues and make payments in lieu of property taxes.
The Shabbona Business Association and local unions support the deal but some citizens have formed groups to oppose the casino.
