The Navajo Nation is a dry reservation but council delegates will debate legislation to allow sales of liquor at the tribe's first casino.
"That will be real controversial," delegate LoRenzo Bates told the Associated Press.
The tribe's first casino will be located near Gallup, New Mexico. It is expected to open in July.
Navajo gaming chief Bob Winter says alcohol sales will help the casino.
Without it, he says the tribe could lose 10 percent of its restaurant income and 5 percent of gaming income.
The legislation will be debated during the Navajo Nation Council's winter session, which starts Monday, January 28.
