The
Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island is renewing its push for a casino.
The tribe wants the state to support efforts to repeal a federal law that bars gaming on the reservation. The law was written after the tribe won a court ruling in favor of gaming.
Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the tribe will share revenues and make an immediate cash payment from a casino on the reservation. He said the money will patch up holes in the state's budget.
State politicians, in the past, have opposed repealing the law -- also known as the
Chafee rider, named for the late Sen. John Chafee, the Republican who authored it.
