Five California tribes agree to abide by MICS

Five California tribes have agreed to comply with the National Indian Gaming Commission's minimum internal control standards, or MICS.

The MICS cover nearly every aspect of a Class III operation. But the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals said the NIGC lacks authority to enforce them on tribes.

The ruling is being appealed. Meanwhile, the Pala Band of Luiseno Mission Indians, the Picayune Rancheria, the Rumsey Rancheria, the Twenty Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians and the United Auburn Indian Community each passed gaming ordinances to compy with the MICS.

"The commission and I look forward once again to assisting these tribes in their regulation of Class III gaming," NIGC Chairman Phil Hogen said yesterday.
