Union vote set for Saginaw Chippewa casino

The National Labor Relations Board will be overseeing a union vote this Thursday at the casino owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan.

The Teamsters union wants to organize about 300 housekeeping staff at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. But the tribe has passed a law that outlaws unions on the reservation.

In advance of the vote, the two sides are trying to convince staff to go their way. The tribe is appealing the NLRB's order for the election.

During the Bush administration, the NLRB overturned 30 years of precedent and asserted jurisdiction at tribal enterprises. The board said each tribe will be looked at on a case-by-case basis.
