"Spokesmen for the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians declared long before the Four Winds Casino Resort opened near New Buffalo that the band would be a responsible community member. Now it has begun to deliver on that promise.
The Pokagon Fund, a not-for-profit organization formed by the Pokagon Band, will substantially benefit the villages, cities and townships surrounding the Four Winds. In addition to being a concrete offer of friendship to the community, the fund will help to build sound relationships. For the Four Winds to get off to such a positive start is both generous and wise.
The fund will support local government and charitable projects in New Buffalo Township and city, Chikaming Township, the villages of Michiana and Grand Beach and Three Oaks Township and village. Along with the River Valley and New Buffalo schools, the local governments have been invited to regard the fund as a partner in their future undertakings.
The Pokagons are putting up a substantial amount of money: 2 percent of slot machine revenue. The fund is one of a kind. Pokagon Band chairman John Miller described the relationships that will be formed as "government-to-government" -- from the federally recognized Pokagon Band to southwestern Berrien County's hometowns."
