Union seeks vote at Saginaw Chippewa casino

The Teamsters union is moving forward with efforts to organize workers at the casino owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan.

The union filed a formal request with the National Labor Relations Board to conduct an election at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. Organizers want better wages and working conditions.

Tribes aren't mentioned in federal labor law. But the NLRB has said it will assert jurisdiction on reservations in a case-by-case basis.

Factors included whether a tribal enterprise, such as a casino, employs a large number of non-Indians or impacts non-Indians. The Saginaw Chippewa casino is mid-Michigan’s largest employer, The Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun reported.
