California compact opponents turn in signatures

Opponents of four gaming compacts in California have turned in signatures on a petition to force a vote on the agreements.

A coalition of unions, racetracks and tribes organized the campaign. They say the compacts allow for an unfair expansion of four already successful tribal casinos.

The United Auburn Indian Community and the Pala Band of Mission Indians helped finance the effort. They were among the first to sign compacts with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation also signed compacts. They will be able to add up to 17,000 slot machines to their casinos in exchange for a share of the revenues.
