D.C. Circuit to hear Gun Lake land-into-trust case

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments on October 19 on the Gun Lake Tribe's land-into-trust case.

The tribe, also known as the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, wants 147 acres placed in trust for an initial reservation. The land will be used for a $200 million casino.

Gaming opponents have kept the tribe from moving forward with its plans. A federal judge upheld the land acquisition but Michigan Gambling Opposition appealed.

The D.C. Circuit has ruled in favor of tribes in two similar suits involving newly recognized tribes in Michigan.
