Viejas Band plans second casino on reservation

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians announced plans on Thursday to add a second casino to the reservation.

The $800 million hotel and resort would sit next to the existing casino. It makes the tribe the first in the state with side-by-side casinos, although not the first with multiple gaming facilities.

The would feature 2,500 slots, a 600-room hotel, a pool, a spa, shops, restaurants, a conference center, a multiplex movie theater, two parking structures and a new power plant. Construction is expected to take five years.

A third casino could be on the way if the Ewiiaapaayp Band of Kumeyaay Indians gains federal approval to open a casino on the Viejas Reservation.
