Rincon Band compares state's demand to 'tax'

The Rincon Band of Luiseno Mission Indians and the state of California argued in court on Monday over negotiations for a new gaming compact.

The tribe wants to add more slot machines to its casino. But the state wants a share of the revenues.

"This is a tax," an attorney for the tribe told the court, The North County Times reported. "It's a tax. It's a tax."

The tribe says it is willing to pay for regulatory fees and to offset gambling-related problems. The state says the tribe can afford to share some of its revenues.

The judge handling the case said it might take some time to resolve the dispute.
