Leaders in New Bedford, Massachusetts, are hoping to lure the Mashpee Wampanaog Tribe into building a casino in their city.
The city council will meet with Chairman Glenn Marshall to discuss options for a casino. "We can talk about potential sites in New Bedford, but also talk about what benefits we have that could extend their dollars and leverage," council member David Alves, who supports gaming, told The Cape Cod Times.
The tribe has purchased land in the town of Middleboro for a potential casino. But a spokesperson said the tribe is interested in opportunities in New Bedford.
The tribe's recognition was finalized last month. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the tribe can acquire an initial reservation and open a casino.
