The one-day Native American Economic Impact Summit was held in Hartford, Connecticut, on Thursday.
Officials talked about the impact of the casinos owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun share 25 percent of slot machine revenues with the state, pumped $1.5 billion into the state economy in 2006 and spend $700 million on local goods last year, according to a study.
Since the tribes opened the casinos, they have generated 12 to 13 percent of the job growth in the state since 1992 and have made a total of $4.2 billion in payments to the state. The casinos employ more than 20,000 people, with additional hires coming due to ongoing expansion projects.
