Washington tribes win approval for new compacts

Washington tribes can add more electronic gaming machines to their casinos under new compacts that were approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The 27 tribes can own up to 975 slot machines, an increase of 300 machines. Through leasing from other tribes, the tribes can add up to 1,000 more machines.

The tribes also negotiated the ability to operate cash machines and set their own hours. In exchange, they will contribute one-quarter of 1 percent of their revenues to fight smoking and gambling addiction.

Approval of the compacts was published in the Federal Register last Thursday.
