Mashpee Wampanoag casino leads to recall bid

Three leaders in the town of Middleboro, Massachusetts, are facing a recall for supporting the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's proposed casino.

Some residents are already unhappy with the way the three leaders have managed the town's finances. The casino gives critics more ammunition in their fight.

"A casino will change the character of this town forever," resident Jacqueline Tolosko said at a town meeting, The Boston Globe reported.

The tribe has purchased land in the town for a potential casino. The town has agreed to enter into talks with the tribe but public concern led them to schedule a non-binding referendum on the proposal.

The tribe's federal recognition becomes final this month.
