Bill to restore gaming for Texas tribes delayed again

A bill to restore gaming rights to the Tigua Tribe and the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe was delayed in the Texas House again on Wednesday.

Rep. Norma Chavez (D) said she would continue to press for the bill despite the setbacks. She said the tribes deserve the right to operate casinos on their reservations.

The tribes owned Class III casinos that were shut down by the state. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the tribes were placed under state gambling laws by an act of Congress

The Chavez bill gives the tribes a defense from state prosecution for offering casino games.
