Oneida Nation, New York miss deadline on compact

The Oneida Nation and the state of New York have failed to reach agreement on a new Class III gaming compact.

The tribe and the state were given until April 30 to decide how to proceed with compact negotiations. The deadline was set by the Interior Department.

Now that the date has passed, DOI plans to issue a decision by June 14 on the status of a compact the tribe and the state signed back in 1993. DOI approved the agreement, but it was subsequently invalidated by the state courts.

The tribe and the state say DOI lacks authority to reconsider the compact. But both sides appear to be far apart on a new agreement, with the tribe claiming the state is demanding up to 33 percent of gaming revenues.
