A bill to add more hurdles to off-reservation casinos in Wisconsin appears to be dead.
The state Assembly voted 57-38 in favor of Bill 205. It requires the Legislature, in addition to the governor, to approve off-reservation casinos.
Senate Majority Leader Judy Robson (D) said she doesn't plan to bring the bill up for a vote in the Senate. She represents a district that includes Beloit, where two Chippewa bands want to build an off-reservation casino.
The bill mainly targets the Menominee Nation's proposed off-reservation casino. The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, which operates an off-reservation casino in downtown Milwaukee, opposes the Menominee project.
