Maine House approves Passamaquoddy racino

The Maine House voted 84-59 on a bill to authorize a racetrack with slot machines for the Passamaquoddy Tribe.

The bill faces a veto by Gov. John Baldacci (D). But due to the way it is written, the racino proposal will probably end up before state voters this November.

In 2002, state voters approved slot machines at a non-Indian racetrack. At the same time, they rejected a casino sought by the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe wants to operate 1,500 slot machines at the proposed racetrack.
