Indian gaming won't be a hot issue in Congress

Indian gaming won't be a controversial issue during the 110th Congress, former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell said.

Campbell spoke at the National Indian Gaming Association's conference and trade show last week. He said there won't be any major legislation dealing with the $23 billion tribal casino industry.

In the 109th Congress, Indian gaming faced repeated challenges. Coupled with the Jack Abramoff scandal, tribes had to combat a negative perception of casinos on Capitol Hill.

But while the battle was tough, NIGA Chairman Ernie Stevens Jr., who was re-elected at the meeting, said it was worth it.
