Navajo Nation Council fails to override gaming vetoes

The Navajo Nation Council failed to override two presidential gaming vetoes on Thursday.

The council met in a special session to consider legislation that would allow two New Mexico chapters to create their own gaming enterprises. But the overrides on both measures failed.

That came as a surprise to one delegate because the council previously overrode a veto on another chapter's gaming enterprise. That happened in January.

Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. opposes the creation of local gaming boards. He said all gaming on the reservation should be overseen by the central Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise.
