BIA to hold hearing on Hannahville casino

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will hold a public hearing on March 8 for the Hannaville Indian Tribe's proposed off-reservation casino.

The BIA is preparing an environmental impact statement on the project in Romulus, Michigan, The tribe wants 24 acres placed in trust, of which 9.8 acres will be used for a casino and a hotel [Federal Register].

"In this case, the parcel is located over 450 miles from the tribe's reservation," the BIA said in the Federal Register notice.

If the BIA agrees to the casino, the state governor has to concur under the two-part determination process of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
