Mashantucket Tribe defends slot machine lawsuit

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut says it has the right to sue the town of Ledyard for a tax imposed on slot machines.

The tribe contends the tax is illegal without Congressional approval. But the town says it has a right to impose taxes on leased slot machines.

The tribe doesn't own the slot machines at issue. The tribe says the tax interferes with its sovereign rights.

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 also bars states from taxing gaming revenues.
