New York governor to decide on Mohawk casino

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) will be making a decision on an off-reservation casino for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe within a couple of months, a top aide said.

The Interior Department gave approval for the tribe to open a casino in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City. Spitzer must now give his concurrence under the two-part determination process of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe had hoped former Gov. George Pataki (R), a supporter of the $600 million casino, approved the project before he left office last month. But he decided to leave it to Spitzer.
