Bad River Band to join land-into-trust suit

The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa plans to join a lawsuit over on off-reservation casino in Wisconsin.

The St. Croix Band of Lake Superior Chippewa filed the suit on Friday. It accuses the Bush administration of changing the land-into-trust process to make it harder for tribes to open off-reservation casinos.

The two tribes want to build a casino on 26 acres in Beloit. The site is more than 300 miles from each tribe's reservation.

The regional Bureau of Indian Affairs has approved the two-part determination for the casino. But officials in Washington, D.C., have decided to review the tribe's land-into-trust application first rather than finish the two-part determination and send the paperwork to Gov. Jim Doyle (D) for his concurrence.
