The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut says its sovereignty protects the Foxwoods Resort Casino from federal labor laws.
In a 50-page request, the tribe says the National Labor Relations Board can't assert jurisdiction on the reservation. Citing a case involving a California tribe, the NLRB has called a November 24 vote to organize the United Auto Workers union.
But the tribe says the case doesn't apply because Foxwoods is much larger than the casino that was at issue in California. The tribe also says its legal system -- which includes labor laws -- is much more sophisticated than the one of the California tribe.
The UAW hopes to organize about 3,000 dealers at Foxwoods.
