Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-Rhode Island) has signed on as co-sponsor of H.R.2176,
a bill that would authorize an off-reservation casino for the Bay Mills Indian
Community of Michigan.
Kennedy said the tribe deserves the casino as part of a land claim settlement. The tribe would get 15 acres in Port Huron, more than 300 miles from its claim to 110 acres at Charlotte's Beach.
The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe opposes the bill because it says it has ancestral ties to Port Huron. The Bay Mills Indian Community is Chippewa.
