Two tribes have sued California's Secretary of State to halt a ballot referendum against their gaming compacts.
The Morongo Band of Mission Indians and the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians say the petitions for the referendum were turned in too late. They say Secretary of State Debra Bowen gave compact
opponents too much time to gather and submit signatures.
A coalition of labor unions, racetracks and two tribes want voters to reject four gaming compacts.
They say they turned in about 2.8 million signatures, more than enough to put the issue on the February 2008 ballot.
