A group called DeKalb County Taxpayers Against the Casino has been formed to oppose the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's proposed casino in Illinois.

The group has about 100 to 150 members. They say the tribe, which is based in Kansas, shouldn't be allowed to open a casino on land that was reserved for a Potawatomi chief.

"It seems clear to us that the U.S. government at the time took great pains to make sure that this not a reservation," the group's spokesperson told The MidWeek News.

The tribe says the 1,280-acre reservation still exists and is seeking federal approval to open a casino there. The National Indian Gaming Commission plans to seek input on the proposal starting October 1.

DCTAC has hired James Lynch to attempt to debunk the tribe's claims. Lynch has opposed tribal claims in New York and Connecticut.
