Pauma Band casino expansion sees opposition

In 2004, the Pauma Band of Mission Indians signed a compact with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) to add more slot machines to Casino Pauma.

As part of the agreement, the tribe has to address the impacts of the expansion. That has local residents up in arms over the size of the $300 million casino and hotel resort and the effect it would have on traffic, safety and the community.

"We don't doubt that the tribe has a sovereign right to build, but it doesn't have to be 23 stories high," neighbor Charles Mathews told The North County Times. "We would prefer that the focal point be the beauty of the valley."

The tribe has prepared a 178-page report that addresses the casino's impact on traffic, noise, air quality, public safety and other aspects. Comments are being accepted until September 23.
