The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts has filed plans for its casino resort with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The tribe envisions a 550-acre resort with 4,000 slot machines, 180 table games, a 10,000-seat auditorium, a hotel with up to 1,500 rooms and eight to 10 restaurants. The total size of the facility would be 850,000 square-feet, which is smaller than some shopping malls in the region.
The tribe signed a deal to share revenues with the town of Middleboro. The agreement was approved overwhelmingly by town voters.
The tribe now needs to have its land place in trust and negotiate a Class III compact with the state.
Slot machines and other types of Class III gaming are not yet legal in Massachusetts.
